Qubicle Constructor

Qubicle Constructor

Call it “3D pixel art” or “voxel art”, on minddesk.com you find a lot of examples for this type of design and the Qubicle Constructor is the tool to create it. It’s an easy to use software for Microsoft Windows and with it you can create 3d models based on cubes. It combines standard 2D image editing tools with a powerfull function-set for editing 3D cube matrices.

We need several International Ocean Stations. We need better semi-permanent inhabitable structures to host research in the deep sea. We like to compare the IOS to the International Space Station. It took decades and 150 Billion $ to world rocket scientists to build the the ISS, to produce semi-secret data. We believe that is a few years, with a limited budget we can build together several International Ocean Stations as open-source architectures. Get on board.

Funky Forest - Interactive Ecosystem

Funky Forest - Interactive Ecosystem from Theo Watson on Vimeo.
Funky Forest is a wild and crazy ecosystem where children manage the resources to influence the environment around them. By using their bodies or pillow "rocks" and "logs", water flowing from the digital stream on the floor can be dammed and diverted to the forest to make different parts grow. If a tree does not receive enough water it withers away but by pressing their bodies into the forest children create new trees based on their shape and character. As children explore and play they discover that the environment is inhabited by a variety of sonic life forms and creatures who appear and disappear depending on the health of the forest.  As the seasons change the creatures also go through a metamorphosis.

Theo Jansen - Walking city

theo from play people on Vimeo.

Since 1990 Theo Jansen has been occupied with the making of a new nature. Not pollen or seeds but plastic yellow tubes are used as the basic material of this new nature. He makes skeletons which are able to walk on the wind. Eventually he wants to put these animals out in herds on the beaches, so they will live their own lives.

The Eye Writer project

The EyeWriter is a low-cost eye-tracking apparatus and custom software that allows artists with paralysis resulting from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) to draw using only their eyes. The project is an ongoing collaborative research effort to empower people who are suffering from ALS with creative technologies. Members of the Graffiti Research Lab, Free Art and Technology (FAT), Openframeworks and The Ebeling Group communities teamed-up with a legendary LA graffiti writer, publisher and activist, named Tony Quan, aka TEMPTONE. Tony was diagnosed with ALS in 2003, a disease which has left him almost completely physically paralyzed… except for his eyes. This international team is working together to create a low-cost, open source eye-tracking system that will allow ALS patients to draw using just their eyes. The long-term goal is to create a professional/social network of software developers, hardware hackers, urban projection artists and ALS patients from around the world who are using local materials and open source research to creatively connect and make art with their eyes.

The core development teams consists of members of Graffiti Resarch Lab, Open Frameworks and Free Art and Technology (FAT): Tony Quan, James Powderly, Evan Roth, Chris Sugrue, Theo Watson and Zach Lieberman.

Intensive Fields Conference 2009

The "Intensive Fields" conference was held in December 2009 and provided a discourse regarding the use of computation and parametric techniques as a means of addressing the design of large urban developments.

"For some time now, digital technologies have had a substantial impact on architectural design. From the use of standard drafting packages to the more experimental use of generative design tools. But how might these digital technologies – and parametric design tools in particular – help us to design cities?
The conference was organized around a series of forums. Main speakers, Manuel DeLanda, Roland Snooks, Marc Fornes, Casey Reas, Francois Roche and keynote speaker, Patrik Schumacher, presented their papers, and then were joined in debate by a range of other experts"

Adam Curtis 'The Trap'

Adam Curtis's documentary the trap talks about the modern political realities, where the policies came from and the massive failures of those ideals and how they have ended up exactly where they did not want to be. This episode starts in the Cold War and shows the seeds that were sown to produce the modern political reality.

Kowloon Walled City was a densely populated, largely ungoverned settlement in Kowloon, Hong Kong. Originally a Chinese military fort, the Walled City became an enclave after the New Territories were leased to Britain in 1898. Its population increased dramatically following the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong during World War II. From the 1950s to the 1970s, it was controlled by Triads and had high rates of prostitution, gambling, and drug use. In 1987, the Walled City contained 33,000 residents within its 6.5-acre (0.03 km2; 0.01 sq mi) borders.

In January 1987, the Hong Kong government announced plans to demolish the Walled City. After an arduous eviction process, demolition began in March 1993 and was completed in April 1994. Kowloon Walled City Park opened in December 1995 and occupies the area of the former Walled City. Some historical artifacts from the Walled City, including its yamen building and remnants of its South Gate, have been preserved there.
